As you and I discussed yesterday on the telephone, the House and Senate confrees have made progress on appropriations and budget issues, including a couple of issues that we talked about in our phone call. However, they have not come to an agreement on how to close out Fiscal Year 2009 with a balanced budget.

STATEMENT OF GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR ON MEDICAID AND BUDGET NEGOTIATIONS
Yesterday an “agreement in principle” on Medicaid issues was announced by Medicaid negotiators, but this so-called “solution” has a huge, fundamental flaw: It would give Medicaid a blank check and expose Mississippi taxpayers to the risk of a severe, illegal budget deficit.

GOVERNOR BARBOUR: CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON NEW BAY ST. LOUIS FIRE STATION
Governor Haley Barbour praised Bay St. Louis leaders for continuing rebuilding efforts with the construction of a new fire station to serve a newly annexed area of the coastal city. State and local leaders are expected to break ground today on the new fire station, which is funded with $1.4 million in flexible Community Development Block Grants from Mississippi’s federally-sourced $5 billion Hurricane Katrina recovery program.

BARBOUR: BAY ST. LOUIS BEGINS MUCH ANTICIPATED WASHINGTON STREET REVITALIZATION PROJECT
Jackson, Mississippi - Governor Haley Barbour today praised local officials for beginning a centerpiece of Hurricane Katrina recovery work in Bay St. Louis known as the Washington Street Project. The $3 million initiative was funded by Mississippi’s federally-sourced Hurricane Katrina recovery program.

GOVERNOR BARBOUR CALLS FOR ABUNDANT, AFFORDABLE ENERGY
Governor Haley Barbour reiterated his concerns today that the Obama Administration’s cap-and-trade policies would burn America’s families and businesses. Speaking at the 2009 Southern Growth Policies Board annual meeting, Governor Barbour cautioned against having the United States move from having no coherent energy policy to a policy that would increase taxes on oil and gas by $81 billion.

GOVERNOR BARBOUR: MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING OPENS ON COAST
Governor Haley Barbour announced the completion of about 1,000 affordable housing units on the Gulf Coast with today’s opening of 120 new units at Gulfport’s Regency Way Apartments complex. The project was administered by the Mississippi Development Authority’s (MDA) Public Housing Grant Program and funded through Mississippi’s $5.4 billion federally provided Hurricane Katrina recovery package.
