A Proclamation

WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi has regularly suffered the effects of severe weather throughout history, thousands of lives have been lost, and untold amounts of damage and destruction have been caused by severe weather; and

WHEREAS, history has demonstrated that a well-informed and well-prepared citizenry suffers less in personal injury and property damages as a result of these storms; and

WHEREAS, the National Weather Service will commission Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System to provide enhanced weather warning forecasts for the State of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, through State and Federal partnerships, the National Weather Service and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency have brought additional severe weather warning capabilities to Mississippi through the installation of two additional NOAA Weather Radio stations; and

WHEREAS, the National Weather Service, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross and other agencies have expressed a desire to work with the citizens of our state and the news media to inform Mississippians of severe weather safety and preparedness:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Haley Barbour, Governor of the State of Mississippi, hereby proclaim the week beginning February 22, 2004, as

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK

in the State of Mississippi.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Mississippi to be affixed.
