After claiming the nation's top prize in the 2008 Challenge X competition, Mississippi State University's student-led team showcased their fuel efficient vehicle in front of the state Capitol.  Governor Haley Barbour and his wife, First Lady Marsha Barbour, were on hand to congratulate the engineering students and faculty members for their success in the national competition.

Governor Haley Barbour is joined by University of Mississippi Chancellor Robert Khayat and Dennis Cuneo, a former Toyota senior vice president and current Toyota consultant, to announce a new partnership between the State of Mississippi, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Ole Miss to develop a Center for Manufacturing Excellence, which is aimed at keeping jobs at home by educating the nation’s future manufacturing professionals.

Preparations for the 2008 "Mississippi--The Birthplace of America's Music--Celebrates Its GRAMMY Legacy" event include placing life-size banners featuring some of Mississippi's most celebrated musicians around the Governor's Mansion in downtown Jackson. Pictured above is award-winning singer and songwriter Paul Overstreet, who has captured two GRAMMYs for his musical contributions.

This GRAMMY banner features gospel group The Williams Brothers, who have received six GRAMMY nominations in addition to producing sixteen top ten albums. The Williams Brothers are widely considered the most prolific quartet within the entire gospel genre.

Flanked by legislators, educators, administrators, and young students, Governor Haley Barbour signs House Bill 513, which provides $2.5 billion in state funding for K-12 education in Fiscal Year 2009.  The Governor noted the legislation is the realization of many of his educational goals, including fully funding the Mississippi Adequate Education Program and funding for a new dyslexia screening program.

Governor Haley Barbour and First Lady Marsha Barbour join other local business leaders and officials, including Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant, Jackson Mayor Frank Melton, and David Watkins of Watkins Partners, to formally kick off the renovation of the historic King Edward Hotel in downtown Jackson.

Brigadier Gen. William “Bill” Freeman, Jr., of Newton, has been named by Governor Barbour as the state's Adjutant General, replacing Maj. Gen. Harold Cross who recently announced his retirement. In this position, Gen. Freeman will command the Mississippi Army and Air National Guard.

Governor Haley Barbour announces a new $3.5 million, two-year major law enforcement initiative targeting the "worst of the worst" felony drug and violent gun offenders in Hinds County and Jackson. For the announcement, Governor Barbour was joined by city, state, and federal officials, including Hinds County District Attorney Robert Schuler Smith; Jackson Chief of Police and Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillan; director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Marshall Fisher; and Chief Justice Jim Smith.

Governor Barbour appoints United States Representative Roger Wicker, 56, to fill the vacancy created by Senator Trent Lott's recent resignation from the United States Senate.  Wicker, who represented Mississippi's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, will serve as a U.S. Senator from Mississippi until a special election is held in November 2008.

Governor Barbour joins Toyota Auto Body company officials for the groundbreaking ceremony of Auto Parts Manufacturing Mississippi, Inc.  The business, which is located in the Harry A. Martin North Lee Industrial Complex, will serve as a supplier to the new Toyota plant to be located in Blue Springs, Miss.

Governor Barbour and First Lady Marsha Barbour congratulate Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie for his leadership at a ceremony held to recognize the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department, which is the first sheriff's department in the state to receive accreditation from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission for professionalism and efficiency.
